Flying Lizard Motorsports Revisits Heaven on Earth at VIRginia International Raceway
DANVILLE, Vir., (June 15, 2022) – Famous actor and race car driver Paul Newman once said of VIRginia International Raceway (VIR), “If there's a Heaven on Earth, it's VIR,” and this weekend Flying Lizard Motorsports returns to the Alton, Virginia track for another action-packed race event. The Lizards will contest their two Aston Martin Vantage GT4 cars in the Pirelli GT4 America and GT America powered by AWS for a pair of double header races.
"We have had a lot of success at VIR in the past and the track seems well suited to the Aston Martin." said Program Manager Darren Law. "It is one of the great tracks in the US. The facility is beautiful, and the track is challenging for the drivers. Setup is tricky here because you have a mix of some very high-speed corners as well as medium and low-speed power-down sections so you can’t just focus on a single handling characteristic. Everyone is working together well on the team and we are looking forward to a great weekend."
The Lizards first raced at VIRginia International Raceway in 2012, in the American Le Mans Series, finishing second with drivers Jorg Bergmeister and Patrick Long. The team last raced at the circuit in GT4 America, with driver Michael Dinan and his Aston Martin Vantage sweeping the weekend, taking all three wins in the then-sprint racing series.
Pirelli GT4 America
In GT4 America, drivers Elias Sabo and Andy Lee have had a series of ups and downs in the first four rounds of the season. The duo kicked off the first race of the season with a third-place finish at Sonoma Raceway but closed out round four at NOLA Motorsports Park with an early retirement after getting hit by another car, causing sufficient damage to the No. 8 Aston Martin Vantage GT4. The pair find themselves in eighth in the team 2022 standings, just ten points away from entering into the top five.
GT America powered by AWS
The GT America series runs rounds five and six of the championship this weekend, though only Elias Sabo’s third and fourth of the season, after sitting out the first two rounds at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. Sabo started his season off with a competitive presentation, finishing fifth in his first event at Sonoma Raceway. Contact with another car retired the No. 8 Aston Martin Vantage GT4 early in the following round, but the British racing machine is prepared and ready to go for this weekend’s double header at VIR.
