Elkart Lake, Wisconsin- At 4.048 miles in length, with 14 turns, Road America is virtually the same today as it was when it was constructed in 1955. The track is revered the world over as one of the world’s finest and most challenging road courses. It’s no wonder that the Pirelli GT4 America racers have been looking forward to this weekend. As a bonus, the track has the reputation for the best food in motorsports.
With eight of 14 races completed, this is make or break time for those seeking championships. For those teams who have struggled this year, this is a chance to regroup, secure late season glory, and lay the groundwork for 2023.
35 cars and 70 drivers are set for a pair of 60-minute races where pitstops can be a key strategy point.
Three Races Within GT4
Three categories race within the Pirelli GT4 America series. Silver, Pro-Am, and Am. They are differentiated by the drivers and their FIA Driver categories and pairings. Drivers are rated as Bronze - A racer in the early stages of their career, Silver - An accomplished club racer, Gold - a professional racer, and Platinum - The highest level of a professional racer, typically a factory driver.
Silver
The #18 RS1 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport of Eric Filgueiras and Stevan McAleer have been the team to beat in 2022 scoring an amazing seven wins from eight starts. They have scored 187 points from a possible 200. They have been fast on the track and have been virtually flawless on driver change pitstops, a key ingredient for success.
Breaking the RS1 streak was the #34 Conquest Racing / JWF Motorsports Mercedes-AMG of Gavin Sanders and Michai Stephens. The team had scored three runner-up finishes before the win at VIR. The team has a 100% finishing record and has scored 132 points.
Nipping at the heels of the top two are Smooge Racing and Auto Technic Racing, sitting third and fourth in points. Both teams are on the cusp of winning, Smooge has four podium finishes while AutoTechnic has five. In 2021, the #68 Smooge Racing Toyota GR Supra GT4 of Kevin Conway and John Geebreght scored the Am class win at Road America race 1. Can the duo repeat that win, this time in Silver?
Pro-Am
Pro-Am has been the most evenly competitive class so far this season with five different teams taking race wins.
The #47 NOLASPORT Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport team of Scott Noble and Jason Hart hold a slight Pro-Am points lead over the #120 Premier Racing Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport of Adam Adelson/Elliott Skeer. Noble and Hart scored a win at VIR along while the Premier Racing duo had a podium sweep in New Orleans but had challenging weekends at both Sonoma and VIR. NOLASPORT leads Premier Racing 108-104
Sitting third, just ten points out of first, is the #52 Auto Technic Racing BMW M4 GT4 (Tom Capizzi/John Capestro-Dubets). After a slow start at Sonoma, the team scored wins at both VIR and Watkins Glen. The team is strong at Road America having scored a pair of second-place finishes in 2021.
Fourth in points is the #24 Heart of Racing Team Aston Martin Vantage AMR (Gray Newell/Ian James) who won at Watkins Glen. Right behind them is Elias Sabo and Andy Lee (#8 Flying Lizard Motorsports Aston Martin Vantage AMR). Sabo and Lee are on a three-race podium streak, but have yet to secure a win.
Sixth in points, BSport Racing will be looking to for a return to their Sonoma form when their #15 Aston Martin Vantage AMR (Kenton Koch/Bryan Putt) swept both races.
How strong are the Pro-m teams? In 2021, the Pro-Am teams took the overall wins at both Road America races beating all of the Silvers.
Am
It’s going to be a tall task for anyone to chase down Charlie Postins and James Clay (#36 BimmerWorld BMW M4 GT4) for the Am class championship. The team has scored six wins, including their current streak of four in a row. They have a 43-point lead among teams, and 68 to the closest driver!
Looking to reduce that points gap will be the #19 NOLASPORT Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport team led by Alain Stad. Stad has scored one win, and five other top-four finishes with two different co-drivers. Stad started the season with Seth Thomas before being joined by Matt Travis at Watkins Glen.
Making their series debut at Road America will be the #59 G2 Speed/GSpeed BMW M4 GT4 of Grayson Farischon teamed with veteran Mike Skeen. Farischon is a sixteen year old phenom from Oklahoma who began karting at the age of ten.
