Sebring, Florida - As track temperatures continued to rise, drivers took to the track late Friday afternoon for the second Pirelli GT4 America practice session. With clouds looming over the circuit, teams continued to bring the heat and pushed their cars to the limit in preparation for this weekend’s action.
Stevan McAleer took an early lead in the session, topping the overall charts and the Silver class in his #18 RS1 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport. The Scottish driver set a blazing lap time of 2.11.517. With teammate Eric Filgueiras paving the way in the first practice session Friday morning, the championship leaders are already looking dominant yet again. Michai Stephens (#34 Conquest Racing/JMF Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT4) continued to creep closer to the leaders, building off the knowledge gained by teammate Gavin Sanders in the first practice session. The American and Canadian duo were faced with poor luck in the previous round, but are looking to kick things off with a fresh start at Sebring. Austen Smith (#51 Auto Technic Racing BMW M4 GT4) rounded off the Top 3 in the class, 0.995 seconds behind the top time.
Tom Capizzi was quick to impress behind the wheel of the #52 Auto Technic Racing BMW M4 GT4. He secured the second-best overall time, first in the Pro-Am class. With two wins so far this season, the team are currently sitting third in the class championship, still within striking distance of the top two. Elias Sabo (#8 Flying Lizard Motorsports Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT4) was just 0.198 seconds off Capizzi’s time. He has his eyes on the prize and will be looking to score a win, after five podiums this season. Jay Logan rounded off the Top 3 in the Pro-Am class, with only 0.058 seconds separating the #71 GMG Racing Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport from Sabo.
In the Am class, it was Nick Shanny who paved the way in the #20 Carrus Callas Raceteam Toyota GR Supra GT4. He narrowly edged out Nelson Calle (#83 RS1 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport), the leader in the first practice session, by a mere 0.139 seconds. Class leader Charlie Postins (#36 BimmerWorld BMW M4 GT4) finished third in the class once again, demonstrating his experience and consistency.
Qualifying gets underway at 10:40 AM ET and 11:00 AM ET on Saturday and Race 1 starts at 4:05 PM ET.
