Weekend Sweep for RAFA Racing Team and Random Vandals Racing
  • Gonzalez, Workman Win Silver
  • Redemption for Craven in Pro-Am
  • Holt, Strippling Send a Message in Am Class
  • Provisional Race 2 Results

The second race of the Pirelli GT4 America weekend at Sonoma Raceway brought a cleaner, more strategic contest than the season opener, with just one late full-course caution interrupting the action. That yellow flew in the closing moments after the No. 38 BimmerWorld BMW M4 GT4 of Michael Petralia went off track, ultimately freezing the field and sending Race 2 to its conclusion under caution.

When the checkered flag flew, Westin Workman and Tyler Gonzalez delivered the Silver Class victory for RAFA Racing Team, Sam Craven and Kenton Koch came out on top in Pro-Am for Random Vandals Racing, and Judson Holt and Denny Stripling completed a perfect Sonoma weekend in Am for Random Vandals Racing.

Silver Class

The Silver battle remained tight throughout the race, especially after the driver changes began to shake up the order.

As the pit sequence unfolded, Tyler Gonzalez in the No. 68 RAFA Racing Team Toyota Gazoo Racing GR Supra GT4 EVO2 briefly moved to the front before handing the car over to Westin Workman, who rejoined in strong position with Kevin Boehm close behind. Workman then found himself in pursuit of the overall lead, applying pressure to Sam Craven in the closing stages before making the decisive move to the front.

Behind him, Kevin Boehm in the No. 51 Auto Technic Racing BMW M4 GT4 kept the pressure on and remained firmly in contention to the finish, while Josh Green brought the No. 98 Random Vandals Racing BMW M4 GT4 home in third to complete the Silver Class podium.

The late caution locked in the order, allowing Workman and Gonzalez to claim their second straight class victory of the weekend. Boehm finished second, with Green rounding out the top three.

“It was amazing,” said Workman. “Tyler Gonzalez started the race and pulled out a gap to the other Silver cars, so I knew I just had to get in, do my job and bring it home. I know I’m surrounded by the right people when I get out of the car and the first thing I’m thinking about is how we’re going to win the next one and how I can improve. I still think there’s a little more pace for me to find, but Tyler did a great job, the team did a great job, and I’m super thankful to RAFA Racing and everyone involved for making this happen.”

“I couldn’t be happier,” added Gonzalez. “It’s a great start to a long championship, so now we just have to keep pushing and keep this momentum going. Westin did a great job, and I’m really happy for him. It’s going to be a fun year for sure.”

Pro-Am Class

Kenton Koch led the field overall and in Pro-Am at the start in the No. 94 Random Vandals Racing BMW M4 GT4, but he had no room to breathe early on as Michael Cooper in the No. 33 Blackdog Racing McLaren Artura GT4 stayed within striking distance.

Koch gradually began to stretch his advantage, building a healthy gap about 10 minutes into the race as he settled into a strong rhythm out front. Behind the leaders, Marc Miller encountered trouble in the No. 39 Dome Motorsport Mercedes-AMG GT4 after sustaining damage that forced an unscheduled trip down pit lane.

Further back, the fight around sixth overall brought plenty of action, with Francis Selldorff in the Silver class car No. 51 Auto Technic Racing BMW M4 GT4 defending from Pro-Am driver Tyler McQuarrie in the No. 38 BimmerWorld BMW M4 GT4 and Greg Liefooghe in the No. 90 Stephen Cameron Racing BMW M4 GT4. At the same time, Stevan McAleer continued to advance through the field in the No. 19 Auto Technic Racing BMW M4 GT4, climbing to third in class.

Once the pit window opened, the complexion of the race began to change. Cooper handed the No. 33 McLaren to Tony Gaples in the class lead with 25 minutes remaining.

Not long after, contact between Jonathan Perichon in the No. 90 Stephen Cameron Racing BMW and Matt Travis in the No. 47 NOLASPORT Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport sent Travis spinning, resulting in a drive-through penalty for the No. 90.

With less than 20 minutes to go, Sam Craven had emerged with both the class lead and second overall in the No. 94 Random Vandals Racing BMW, while Gaples held second in Pro-Am and maintained his place on the podium. Craven remained in control to the finish, taking the Pro-Am win and crossing the line second overall. Gaples held on for second, while Roland Krainz secured third in class in the No. 19 Auto Technic Racing BMW M4 GT4.

“It feels great,” said Craven. “Yesterday’s race was one of the worst I’ve had. I made a big mistake, and it cost someone else their race, which is never something you want. To come back today, put in the work, put in the time and come away with the win feels really good.”

“It was a strong recovery and a good reset mentally,” added Koch. “Sam did a great job today, and it was a great result for the Random Vandals team. BMW was quick, and it’s nice to bounce back this way.”

Am Class

In Am, Denny Stripling led the way early aboard the No. 188 Random Vandals Racing BMW M4 GT4, running comfortably inside the overall top 10.

Once the pit stops cycled through, Judson Holt took over the No. 188 and continued the team’s strong run, asserting control of the class while climbing as high as eighth overall. Behind him, Zach Lumsden in the No. 413 Flying Lizard Motorsports BMW M4 GT4 ran second in class, while Alex Garcia looked to rebound from his Race 1 misfortune in the No. 21 ACI Motorsports BMW M4 GT4.

Holt never relinquished the advantage, crossing the line first in class and sixth overall to complete a weekend sweep for the No. 188 Random Vandals Racing entry. Garcia finished second after a hard-fought run, with Lumsden close behind in third.

“We love racing with these guys,” said Stripling. “It was a great race today, and I think the message is that we’re here to make some noise. We’re going to be strong this year, and I’m really looking forward to getting back to our home state for COTA.”

“We had such a blast here,” said Holt. “I can’t wait to get to COTA. Thank you to the Random Vandals team, and thank you to my wife for being here. We wanted this weekend to go this way, and to come out of here with these results feels incredible. We feel very fortunate.”
