Rain transformed Road America into a demanding test for the Pirelli GT4 America field in Race 2, with wet conditions prompting a single-file start behind the safety car and setting the stage for an action-packed hour at the National Park of Speed.
Through changing conditions, multiple cautions and battles throughout the field, RS1 continued its dominant Silver class campaign as Spencer Pumpelly and Luca Mars secured their seventh consecutive class victory while also taking the overall win. Blackdog Racing capped off a strong home weekend with another Pro-Am victory, while TechSport Racing completed a sweep of the Am class with Frankie Muniz and Tyler Stone.
Silver Class
Tyler Gonzalez immediately established himself as a contender aboard the No. 68 RAFA Racing Team Toyota GR Supra GT4 EVO2, going wheel-to-wheel with Pro-Am leader Michael Cooper in the opening stages as the pair separated themselves from the field.
Behind them, Luca Mars in the No. 028 RS1 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport found himself in a tightly contested battle with Josh Green in the No. 98 Random Vandals Racing BMW M4 GT4 EVO and Parker DeLong in the No. 131 Advance Motorsports McLaren Artura GT4.
The pit-stop sequence ultimately played into RS1's hands, allowing Mars and co-driver Spencer Pumpelly to move into the overall lead.
Kellymoss also made significant progress through the field. Loni Unser charged forward in the No. 24 Porsche, gaining 11 positions and placing herself in contention for a podium before the next full-course caution. Teammate Riley Dickinson was equally aggressive aboard the No. 73 Porsche, moving from 18th to 12th overall following the restart.
Once at the front, the championship-leading RS1 pairing never looked back. Pumpelly and Mars secured their seventh consecutive Silver class victory and extended their championship advantage to 65 points with four rounds remaining.
Yves Baltas and Jimmy Llibre delivered second place in class aboard the No. 7 ACI Motorsports Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport, while Austin Jurs and Parker DeLong completed the podium for Advance Motorsports in the No. 131 McLaren.
For Pumpelly, the victory was particularly rewarding after a challenging start to the weekend for the team.
“We were pretty down low on Thursday morning and a lot of other teams would have packed up, maybe would just try to get a car out there to get some points,” Pumpelly said. “This team said, ‘Nope. We’re going to try to win too.’ This kid was amazing yesterday and this morning and I just had a ton of fun out there. Road America in the wet is awesome.”
Mars credited Pumpelly's experience as an important part of his own development throughout their successful season together.
“It’s awesome getting to work with someone like Spencer who’s been around doing this for so long and just being able to see how he handles a mistake and goes out the next session and forgets about it and goes and kicks ass on the track,” Mars said.
Pro-Am Class
Michael Cooper put the No. 33 Blackdog Racing McLaren Artura GT4 at the center of the action from the opening lap, battling Silver class contender Tyler Gonzalez for the outright lead despite the pair competing in separate categories.
Marc Miller held a strong position aboard the No. 39 Dome Motorsport Mercedes-AMG GT4, while Ryan Yardley kept the No. 25 ACI Motorsports Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport firmly in the Pro-Am fight.
Miller's progress was interrupted by a spin, while the pit-stop cycle saw Tony Gaples take over the No. 33 McLaren from Cooper and briefly emerge at the head of the overall field.
The difficult conditions continued to catch out several competitors. Jonathan Perichon went into the gravel aboard the No. 90 Stephen Cameron Racing BMW M4 GT4 EVO, while Miller later made contact with Am class contender Alex Garcia at Turn 5. The incident brought out a full-course caution and ended Garcia's race.
Another caution followed with four minutes remaining when Sam Craven spun the No. 94 Random Vandals Racing BMW M4 GT4 EVO into the barriers, effectively bringing the competitive running to a close.
Gaples and Cooper emerged with the Pro-Am victory in the No. 33 McLaren, giving Blackdog Racing another win at its home event. Michael Tosi and co-driver Marc McCumbee finished second aboard the No. 77 McCumbee McAleer Racing Ford Mustang GT4, while Damir Hot and Ryan Yardley completed the podium in the No. 25 ACI Motorsports Porsche.
“Another fabulous weekend, just kind of like Atlanta, except finally at our home track,” Gaples said. “We’ve never had good luck here, and wow, what a weekend. I’m so happy.”
Cooper was equally pleased to add another victory to Blackdog Racing's season as the championship enters its final rounds.
“It’s just nice to get another one here at Blackdog Racing’s home track,” Cooper said. “It’s great for McLaren, and I’m excited to go to Barber and fight for this championship.”
When asked how many career victories he would ultimately like to reach, Cooper had a simple target in mind: “75 sounded nice.”
Am Class
The Am class delivered its own share of drama as competitors navigated the treacherous conditions.
The No. 30 TechSport Racing Ford Mustang GT4 of Frankie Muniz and Tyler Stone lost time during its mandatory pit stop but remained in contention, while the No. 37 Dome Motorsport Mercedes-AMG GT4 of Laura Hayes and Ed Killeen suffered a spin at Turn 5 that dropped the pairing down the order.
Championship contender Alex Garcia's afternoon then came to an early end following contact with Marc Miller at Turn 5, eliminating the No. 21 ACI Motorsports BMW M4 GT4 EVO from the race.
Muniz, who earned his first professional racing victory one day earlier, returned to the cockpit for his first wet race since 2009 and steadily worked his way into contention.
The decisive moment came when Anthony Geraci made contact with Kris Wilson, sending Wilson into a spin and slowing Geraci. Muniz capitalized on the incident to take over the Am class lead.
From there, Muniz and Stone controlled the remainder of the race to secure their second victory of the weekend and complete an Am class sweep for TechSport Racing at Road America.
Hayes and Killeen finished second aboard the No. 37 Dome Motorsport Mercedes-AMG, with Denny Stripling and Judson Holt in the No. 188 Random Vandals Racing BMW rounding off the podium after a post race penalty was handed to Kris Wilson and Zach Lumsden in the No.413 Colorado Motorsport w/ Flying Lizard BMW GT4.
The significance of the weekend was not lost on Muniz, who became emotional after taking the checkered flag.
“The whole time after the checkered flag came out, I was literally crying in my helmet,” Muniz said. “I made the sacrifice to my family to go racing and to be an inspiration for my son. I’m so grateful to Ford Racing, TechSport Racing and my entire team. This is awesome. There’s no feeling like this on the planet.”
Stone added that the team's recent performances have reinforced their belief in what they can accomplish.
“Like I said in Atlanta, after our podium there, we felt like the sky’s the limit for us,” Stone said. “And this proved it.”
