Watkins Glen, New York - The Pirelli GT4 America field took over Watkins Glen International for a pair of very hot qualifying sessions that would determine the starting grids for a weekend doubleheader.
The first qualifying session set the stage for the Race 1 starting positions.
Silver
The session was dominated by multiple race winner Eric Filgueiras commanding his #18 RS1 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport. With a time of 1:55.339, he was quickest ahead of GT4 America rookie and Championship runner-up Gavin Sanders in the #34 Conquest Racing/JMF Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT4. Sanders’ best lap was 0.313 slower than Filgueiras. Kevin Conway (#68 Smooge Racing Toyota GR Supra GT4) completed the Top 3 in this blistering hot qualifying session. Austen Smith (#51 Auto Technic Racing BMW M4 GT4) led for the first few minutes of the session and rounded off the Top 4 of the first qualifying session.
Pro-Am
Tom Capizzi (#52 Auto Technic Racing BMW M4 GT4) claimed pole position with a flying lap of 1:56.218, 0.260 ahead of Ross Chouest (#50 Chouest Povoledo Racing Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT4). Gray Newell, driving his #24 Heart of Racing Team Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT4, rounded out the Top 3, in addition to grabbing sixth place overall.
Am
The #36 BimmerWorld BMW M4 GT4, driven by points leader Charlie Postins, posted the fastest lap around Watkins Glen, edging out Rob Walker in his #53 Auto Technic Racing BMW GT4. Sam Owen, a graduate from Skip Barber Racing, put his skills to the test and laid down a lap time of 1:57.154 in his #7 NOLASPORT Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport, giving him the third fastest time in the class.
Race 1 starts at 4:05 PM ET.
The second 15-minute qualifying session set the starting grid ahead of Race 2.
Silver
Stevan McAleer took pole position for Race 2 in his #18 RS1 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport, confirming his team's dominance after teammate Eric Filgueras finished first in Qualifying 1. McAleer set an impressive lap time of 1:55.309. 2021 Am Champion John Geesbrecht (#68 Smooge Racing Toyota GR Supra GT4) and VIR Race winner Michai Stephens (#34 Conquest Racing/JMF Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT4) rounded out the Top 3.
Pro-Am
The Pro-Am drivers monopolized the overall front rows in this Qualifying session. Aaron Telitz (#69 Smooge Racing Toyota GR Supra GT4) was the fastest, with a time of 1:54.882, ahead of the #52 BMW M4 GT4 from Auto Technic Racing of John Capestro-Dubets. The battle for third place was a heated showdown between Andy Lee, Kenton Koch and Billy Johnson as the three drivers were grouped together within 0.015 of each other. Third place ultimately went to Andy Lee (#8 Flying Lizard Motorsports Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT4), ahead of Kenton Koch (#15 Bsport Racing Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT4) and Billy Johnson (#124 ARG/Rotek Racing Ford Mustang GT4).
Am
Seasoned driver Terry Borcheller in his #20 Carrus Callas Raceteam Toyota GR Supra GT4 was the fastest Am driver in the second Qualifying session, setting an overall Top 10 time of 1:55.534, just 0.088 quicker than Jaden Lander in the #72 KRUGSPEED Toyota GR Supra GT4. James Clay followed in third, crossing the line with a 1:55.909 in the #36 BimmerWorld BMW M4 GT4. The Top six qualifiers were all grouped within a second of each other.
Race 2 starts at 11:10 AM ET on Sunday July 24.
